59 New Street Laid Back Luxury at Former Holding Cells
A modern restaurant and cocktail bar housed in the former cells of Chelmsford Magistrate’s Court serving elegance with a touch of eccentricity.
Situated in the unusual venue of the former holding cells for Chelmsford magistrate’s court, we were tasked with transforming the surroundings into a bright, light, chic restaurant and cocktail lounge. Retaining the original features and characteristics of the building, such as the handcuffs still hanging from the cell ceiling, whilst creating an elegant atmosphere was a fun challenge for us.
The natural, almost monochromatic colour palette is kept soft and inviting by using warm wooden tones and creams. The dark woods complement the original windows, and the materials were chosen to complement the exposed brickwork and beams, mixing natural textures of wood, stone and leather with glass and steel we created a luxurious aesthetic without being ostentatious.
The bespoke curved bench seating with plush upholstery makes a focal point of the building’s unusual layout and ties together the transitional space between the bar and restaurant. The combination of cream leather and dark wood chairs with brushed stainless-steel bases for the tables gives a wonderfully industrial chic look, whilst the simple lines keep the furniture understated.
